Patent essentials - Innovating Technology

Nuno Lourenço (Clarke, Modet & Co., Portugal)

Nuno Lourenço has a degree in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering bythe Faculty of Engineering, University of Oporto (FEUP) and was alsogranted a Masters degree in Materials Engineering, having completed histhesis in an industrial environment, namely at FERESPE-Cast Iron andSteel Company. He is also a Post-Graduate in Intellectual Property Rightsby the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon with the support of thePortuguese Association of Intellectual Property and currently applying forPortuguese Patent and Trademark Attorney and for European Patent Attorney. Having been a researcher in several projects, he has also participated innumerous courses, conferences, lectures and seminars and has authoredseveral technical and scientific papers. Nuno Lourenço has worked inClarke, Modet & Co. since 2008 and is currently its Patent Director in Portugal.

Abstract This session will highlight the essential features of the patent system andput forward a set of recommendations, useful tips, procedures andprotection mechanisms. Also, some examples of computer implementedinventions, recently granted patents and court decisions in Europe and in the USA (with references to recent high profile litigation cases) will bepresented and analyzed.
